We Are Carbon NeutralWhilst we minimise the emissions we produce as much as possible, we will never be able to totally eliminate them. We still have to travel; our factory still needs to use energy to produce our packaging material and our computers still need electricity to work.
Thus, since 2003 Tetra Pak UK and now Ireland, have taken steps to become a carbon neutral company. This means that on an annual basis we buy carbon credits from low carbon projects that can effectively offset or ‘neutralise’ the value of our total carbon footprint.
This can either be done by investing I projects that are said to either reduce carbon or avoid/minimise the production of carbon in the first place.
Whilst we recognise that there is a lot of debate around offsetting, we try to keep our offset portfolio in constant review. The offset projects in which we invest not only offer to help reduce overall atmospheric carbon, but they offer real environmental and social benefits to local communities participating in the scheme.
Scope
Since 2003, we have measured and offset all of the activities highlighted in green in the diagram to your right. These are all included in Scopes 1, 2 and 3 of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol developed by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development and the World Resources Institute.
From 2008 onwards, we will be including the transport required to move our material to neighbouring European countries for post consumer recycling.
