11.5% of UK Local Authorities recycle cartons at the kerbside

According to recent research carried out by our Recycling Team, 11.5% of UK Local Authorities are currently recycling cartons at the kerbside; and the figure looks set to increase in the next six months.

Including cartons in kerbside recycling schemes helps residents to recycle many more cartons than they would from a bring bank. The Recycling Team are currently working on how they can best provide Local Authorities with information resources to support them in their move to kerbside recycling of cartons.

Cartons are also widely recycled from bring banks across the UK. There are now a total of 86% of UK and Guernsey Local Authorities collecting cartons for recycling. Click on the interactive map icon at the top of the page to find out where you can recycle your cartons.

Please remember to wash and squash your cartons before you recycle them.

Businesses and schools across the UK to begin recycling cartons

London, UK (10 September 2008) Each year 200 million milk and juice cartons are used in England’s primary schools, while secondary school pupils and staff get through more than 35 million.

Now, thanks to a new initiative launched by Tetra Pak and the carton industry under ACE UK (Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment), these paper-based cartons can be recycled. The Business & Schools Carton Recycling Service announced today, marks a major step forward in expanding carton recycling further across the UK.

While carton collection facilities have recently expanded to over 85% of the UK, so far collections have been limited to domestic collections. Expanding on their existing infrastructure, Tetra Pak’s new service enables schools and businesses across more than half of the UK (53 per cent) to contact their local carton recycling contractors through a straight-forward web portal. Businesses and schools can get a quote, and set up collection.

Fay Dashper, Recycling Operations Manager at Tetra Pak, said: “With many primary schools giving pupils a milk carton every day and companies providing milk for tea, people can now do even more for the environment by recycling their cartons outside their homes. We look forward to seeing more schools and businesses getting involved, and urge every company and school to visit the website, see if their area is covered and start recycling cartons.”
